Champagne Loosens the Tongue

John Maynard Kynes, one of the most influential economists of the 20th century, once remarked that his major regret in life was not having consumed enough champagne. And he's not the only one to wax lyrical when it comes to champagne.

"I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes, I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it if I am; Otherwise, I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty." ~ Madame Bollinger, one of the "grande dames" of French champagne

"Why do I drink Champagne for breakfast? Doesn't everyone?" ~ Noel Coward

"Champagne is the only wine that enhances a woman's beauty." ~ Madame Pompadour, mistress of King Louis XV

"Two warm bodies and one cold bottle of Champagne will produce something more wonderful than would happen without the Champagne." ~ Helen Gurley Brown

"Meeting Franklin Roosevelt was like opening your first bottle of Champagne; knowing him was like drinking it." ~ Winston Churchill

"He who doesn't risk never gets to drink champagne." ~ An old Russian proverb.

"Three be the things I shall never attain: envy, content and sufficient Champagne." ~ Dorothy Parker

"Champagne, if you are seeking the truth, is better than a lie detector. It encourages a man to be expansive, even reckless, while lie detectors are only a challenge to tell lies successfully." ~ Graham Greene

"Champagne makes you feel like it's Sunday and better days are just around the corner." ~ Marlene Dietrich

"Champagne is the one thing that gives me zest when I feel tired." ~ Brigitte Bardot, French actress, six months after her 60th birthday
