In the north of France is the little-known city of Metz, capital of the Lorraine region. Only 80 minutes from Paris, this city usually goes unnoticed by tourists. However over the past few years there has been a cultural revival in Metz and the city is becoming more attractive to tourists and locals alike.

Vibrant, full of life, modern – these are just some of the words being used to describe Metz.  Recently built, the Centre Pompidou-Metz is an extraordinary building and is partially responsible for the renaissance the city is currently experiencing. The Centre is a contemporary art museum that boasts various exhibitions and pieces from famous artists like Picasso, Pollock, and even Warhol.

The universities in Metz also contribute to the growing art lifestyle scene and throughout the year there are many festivals, performances and cultural events.

In the centre of town visitors will be pleased to find a pedestrian only town square, one of the largest commercial pedestrian areas in France. The imposing Saint Etienne Cathedral is one of the biggest draws of Metz and rivals the famous Notre Dame in size and architectural beauty. A lot of the architecture throughout the city dates back to the 18th century and you can almost taste the rich cultural roots when walking past shopfronts or along the riverside.

From the many churches, ancient buildings, and museums, to the fast growing art scene and modernization of the city,Metz is creating a reputation for itself as a city you need to consider visiting on your next trip to France.

The tumultuous history of the city has allowed it to flourish and its rich culture ensures something interesting is available for all types of visitors. With the border so close, there is a distinct German influence on many aspects of life in Metz making the city quite distinctive and fascinating.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet weekend getaway or a day-trip from Paris, Metz has a lot to offer and will definitely surprise you.
