Snow Art - Walking in a Winter Wonderland

If your idea of making the most of winter is sitting in front of a fire sipping chocolat chaud, then you obviously think differently to orienteering enthusiast, map-maker and snow artist, Simon Beck.

Since 2004, this Englishman has strapped on a pair of raquettes or snowshoes and ventured out into the freshly fallen snow at Les Arcs ski resort in France. Along the frozen lakes of Savoie, he spends his days trampling out geometric patterns, footprint by footprint, to create sensational patterns of snow art.

Working five to nine hours a day, each final piece is typically the size of three soccer fields and can take up to two days to complete – unless fresh snow falls or the mountain winds blow snow powder across the area to erase his meticulous work.

Through these stunning pieces of snow art, Simon hopes to spread the message that the mountains and snow are beautiful and worth preserving.
