Verlan

Verlan

As if the French language isn't challenging enough, then there's French slang!

Verlan started after World War II among poor communities and as a way for criminals to talk in code. It's now mainly used by the youth of France, but some words have become so common, you'll hear them in everyday speech as well as in contemporary French movies and songs.

Verlan is created by switching the syllables within a word. Sometimes a letter is dropped or changed to make it sound better.  The word verlan is a great place to start!  The French word for reverse is l’envers. Now put the end syllable at the beginning and the first syllable at the end, and you have verlan.
