Caring for a coated tablecloth

Caring for your acrylic-coated tablecloth: practical tips for everyday use, washing and long-term care

Ah, the joys of a beautiful tablecloth. It can be the foundation for special gatherings and can make everyday meals feel special. But spills happen and fear can set in even when you have a stain-resistant coated cloth.

Don’t panic. Caring for your acrylic coated tablecloth is easy.

Modern coated cloths offer the charm of a fabric tablecloth with the convenience of a protective finish, so they can take the knocks of everyday life. Here’s how to care for yours so it looks good for years.

What makes an acrylic-coated tablecloth special?

Let’s start with the magic formula.  Your tablecloth has an ingenious coating that repels liquids and stains, making your life easier. We know you have better things to do than constantly washing dirty tablecloths after each messy meal.

These tablecloths start with high-quality cotton or polycotton fabric which is then treated with an acrylic coating. This protective layer means:

  • Liquids bead on the surface instead of soaking in
  • Spills can usually be wiped away with a damp cloth
  • You enjoy the softness and drape of fabric without the fuss of constant laundering

Stain resistant tablecloths are lifesavers for busy families and messy dinner parties.  Just be aware that the coating isn’t completely waterproof. This is not a plastic tablecloth.  So if you leave the stain sit too long, it will eventually work its way into the fabric. And like any superhero, it needs the right care to maintain its powers.

Stain removal

Everyday care

  • Act quickly: The sooner you clean up a spill, the less chance it has to stain.
  • Wipe after meals: For most spills, a damp sponge or cloth is all you need. For greasy marks, a little mild detergent works well. Always test on an out of the way spot first if you’re unsure.
  • Avoid harsh products: Strong detergents, bleach, or scouring pads can damage the protective layer.

How to remove stubborn stains

If you don’t get to the stain immediately, it may leave a mark. Here’s how you can lift stubborn stains:

  • Wet the area and make a paste with gentle laundry soap like Sunlight Soap. Do this on both sides of the fabric.
  • Wait 30 minutes and rinse under water. If the stain is still there, repeat this process and then put it in the machine to wash normally.
  • Dry on the line in the sun as this helps to bleach out the stain.

How to wash your coated tablecloth

Your coated tablecloth doesn’t need to be washed often which makes it an eco-friendly choice. But you may want to freshen it up every three or four months.  It can be washed without affecting the coating.  Follow these golden rules:

  • Temperature: Cold or lukewarm up to 30 degrees. Hot water can damage the coating.
  • Detergent: Use a gentle detergent without bleach or fabric softener. These can weaken the coating.
  • Drying: Skip the dryer! Hang dry your tablecloth on the line. Make sure it is completely dry before folding. This will avoid mould from moisture being trapped in the tablecloth. Or better still, put it straight back on the table.
  • Ironing: Yes! If you want to remove every last wrinkle, the coated tablecloth can be ironed. Just remember, you must only iron on the reverse side. Use a medium heat iron with steam. Don’t be concerned about damaging the tablecloth as ironing can actually help reactivate the stain-resistant properties of the fabric.

Storing your coated tablecloth

If you’re not putting the cloth straight back on the table, here are some hints for storage.

  • Make sure the cloth is completely dry before folding or rolling.
  • Store in a cool, dry cupboard away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy the beauty and practicality of your stain-resistant coated tablecloth for years to come. Remember, a little care goes a long way to make sure your beautiful coated tablecloth remains a cherished part of your home for many happy gatherings to come.
