Tablecloth from France

The Bastide Blanc Bleu rectangle French tablecloth has been created with love in the south of France.

This family owned business in Nice have been producing quality tablecloths in the traditional style for "la vie Provencal" since 1933. That's three generations! Made with the finest cotton fabrics, the colourful designs feature the best nature has to offer from this stunning region.

Your Bastide Blanc Bleu rectangle French tablecloth will bring joy to every dining occasion and give a lifetime of pleasure. Ideal for everyday use or for special occasions.

These classic French tablecloths take their name, “Bastide” from a style of town found in the south-west of France.

Bastides were founded in the 13th and 14th century. They were known as “new towns” as the whole town was created at once. They were thought to be inspired by the Roman “castrum”, with a central square lined with sheltered arcades and often, a covered market place. A church was usually built adjacent to the main square. This commercial hub was surrounded by a grid of streets.

Contrary to popular belief, early bastides were not fortified. It wasn’t until the Hundred Years War between England and France ravaged the area that walls were built to protect the towns. There are around 700 Bastides remaining in France.

With it’s lovely border and evenly spaced patterns, these tablecloths are a worthy reminder of these medieval towns.

Choose between 100% cotton or the same 100% cotton tablecloth with an acrylic coating.

100% Cotton:

Normal machine wash in cold or warm water. Washes beautifully. Your tablecloth doesn't shrink and is fade resistant. So easy to care for.

100% Cotton Acrylic Coated:

What a fabulous invention!? Easy care. Simply wipe down with a wet cloth after each use. The cotton fabric is treated with an acrylic coating therefore the tablecloth is stain repellent. It's like magic because any spills simply bead on the cloth ready to be wiped off. Perfect for high traffic areas such as the kitchen or outdoors.

The great thing about the coating is that although there's a light sheen, because the tablecloth is made of cotton (and not plastic or oilcloth), it drapes nicely at the corners and doesn't stick out at awkward angles. This water-repellent cotton can be washed in the washing machine although it doesn't need washing nearly as often as a standard cotton tablecloth. A bonus for the environment and it saves you time and money. Ideal for everyday use.

Complete the Look:

Dress your table in style. Combine with matching napkins or a bread basket for the complete look. Classic elegance to bring a touch of France to your dining.

The photos are as accurate as possible. However, colours in photos are sometimes slightly different to the tablecloth, so small colour variations may occur.

Choose your rectangle tablecloth size

Sizes shown are tablecloth measurements. Choose a cloth larger than your table to allow for overhang.

Measure the length and width of your tabletop. Decide how far you would like the cloth to hang over the edges, then add that amount twice to each measurement.

For a 160 × 110 cm table with 20 cm overhang all around:

  • Length: 160 + 20 + 20 = 200 cm
  • Width: 110 + 20 + 20 = 150 cm

Choose a 200 × 150 cm tablecloth.

Check the overhang of an available size

Subtract your table length from the tablecloth length, then divide by two. Repeat for the width to see how much overhang you will have along each side.

The overhang does not have to be identical at the ends and sides. Around 15 to 25 cm is a useful starting point, but choose what looks good and works with your chairs.

Seating labels are approximate. Always check your table measurements and preferred overhang.

Need a different size?

Available lengths and widths vary by fabric and design. Contact us with your table measurements and preferred design so we can explain the options.

You might like to know

What’s the difference between cotton and coated cotton?

The cotton option has a natural, uncoated finish. Choose Stain Resistant Coating if easy cleanup is your priority. Its protective acrylic coating lets most everyday spills wipe away with a damp cloth.

Does the coated tablecloth feel stiff?

The coated cotton still drapes naturally over the edges of your table. The acrylic coating adds a little structure and a light sheen. It’s softer than a plastic tablecloth.

Can I wash the tablecloth?

Absolutely. The cotton and coated cotton options are machine washable. For the coated version, you can wipe away most everyday spills between washes. See the Care Instructions tab for washing guidance.

Is the coated fabric safe for my family?

Yes. The coated fabric is OEKO-TEX® certified, meaning it has passed strict testing for harmful substances.

How much tablecloth overhang should I allow?

Around 15 to 25 cm on each side is a useful guide, but it comes down to the look you like and how your table is used.

Subtract your table measurement from the tablecloth measurement, then divide by two. Do this for the length and width to see how much overhang you will have.

For example, a 200 × 150 cm tablecloth on a 160 × 90 cm table gives 20 cm overhang at each end and 30 cm overhang along each side.

For more help, read our guide to the ideal overhang for your table.

Is this tablecloth made in France?

Yes. This authentic French tablecloth is designed and made in Nice, in the south of France. The family owned business has been creating traditional Provençal tablecloths since 1933.

The tablecloth is lovely and the colors suit my kitchen decor very well. My kitchen table is oval, and this rectangular tablecloth actually lies well, so I am quite pleased with it. It also wipes clean easily so in addition to be being very attractive, it is also easy to maintain.
